Belgian FSMA: Beware of These New Fraudulent Trading Platforms

On 14 March, the Belgian Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) alerted the public to a number of fraudulent trading platforms it had discovered based on consumer complaints.

The regulator said that these platforms arouse consumers' curiosity by placing ads on social media and online video platforms, or using mobile apps. After obtaining the victim's contact information, the scammers would quickly get in touch with them and sell investment products or services, such as stocks and currencies.

WhatsApp, Telegram and dating apps are common contact methods used in the scams.

The regulator added that these platforms are very aggressive in their tactics and despite being unregulated, they often claim to be authorized or even fake financial authorization information.

To get more money from the victim, the scammers try to remotely control the victim's computer to make the transfer and increase the amount of money transferred over and over again. Some platforms offer "affiliate programs" exhibit signs of a Ponzi scheme.

According to the FSMA, victims of investment scams may eventually find themselves unable to retrieve their funds. It is difficult to get the money back as the scammers are often based in other jurisdictions.
