The Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) has issued an alert to investors regarding fraudulent online offers of Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs). Fraudulent websites have been impersonating legitimate financial institutions and their representatives, luring individuals with promises of high returns on GICs. A Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a fixed-term investment offered by banks and financial institutions, primarily in Canada.
These deceptive schemes present significant financial risks, as they do not involve legitimate investment opportunities or financial advice. Investors who engage with such fraudulent platforms risk substantial financial losses.
To protect themselves, CIRO advises investors to verify the legitimacy of any financial offer by checking the official, registered website of the financial institution. Given that fraudsters frequently pose as legitimate financial advisors who appear registered, CIRO further urges investors to directly confirm with the registered financial institution that they are indeed dealing with the actual registrant before proceeding with any investment.
