French woman Anne was scammed out of €830,000 in a pig-butchering scam and divorced her husband. For a year and a half, she mistakenly believed she was in a relationship with Hollywood actor Brad Pitt.
The scammers contacted the victimized woman through fake social media accounts and WhatsApp, and sent her fake selfies generated by artificial intelligence technology.
The 53-year-old victim, who suffers from mental health issues, took a year and a half to believe she was in a relationship with Pitt. It wasn't until the Hollywood star's relationship with Ines de Ramon came to light that Anne realized she was being scammed.
In order to get the money, the scammer claimed that his bank account had been frozen due to divorce proceedings with his ex-wife Angelina Jolie, but that he was urgent to pay for kidney treatment. Anne then transferred the “surgery money” to the scammer.
The French TV program “Seven to Eight” told the public about Anne's story, but unexpectedly triggered a storm of harassment against the victim.
Anne appeared on the program and shared her photos, which unexpectably attracted a lot of mocking comments and jokes. The show was also accused by some people of not protecting the victim, who may not have been aware of the consequences of publicizing this information.
Netflix France even promoted the words “four films to see with Brad Pitt (really) for free” on social media.
Eventually, the French channel TF1 withdrew the program to protect the victim.
Anne suffers from severe depression and is being treated in hospital.
