Recently, a Malaysian woman reported to the police that she was cheated out of RM260,000 by a cyber scammer.
Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman, police chief of Pahang, Malaysia, said the 32-year-old victim met a foreign man on social media. The man approached the victim and said he was a businessman.
One day, the man said he was struggling with his business and asked for financial support from the woman.
The victim, who agreed to help him, transferred RM260,000 in 14 transactions initiated between Oct. 14 and 27.
It was only last week that the victim realized she had been scammed when the man suddenly cut the communication with her.
The victimized woman reported the case to the police on October 30th. The case is currently being investigated by Pahang police officers.
The pig-butchering scam, also known as romance scam, is a kind of social engineering scam. The scammer often takes the initiative to approach the victim to establish a trusting relationship or even a romantic relationship, manipulating the victims and luring them to invest in a false financial scheme or ask for private information and money.
