Monthly Profit Rate of 3.6%? A Malaysian female doctor Falls Victim to Online Investment Scam, Losing Over RM138,000

20 hours ago BrokersView

Recently, a 30-year-old Malaysian woman fell victim to a meticulously orchestrated online investment scam, resulting in a loss of over RM138,000 (approximately 30,904 USD). As a doctor, she initially hoped to generate extra income through investment but ultimately fell into a trap, experiencing a costly lesson.

False Promise of High Returns Sparked Investment Interest

The scam began on May 24, 2023, when the doctor attended an online investment seminar via Google Meet. During the seminar, she was introduced to several investment plans, and one high-return scheme particularly caught her attention. The salesperson presented an enticing prospect—an investment of RM138,000 would yield monthly returns of RM5,000 for two years. This opportunity appeared highly appealing to her.

Under the persuasion of the salesperson, she decided to invest in the plan and, between July 4 and July 6, 2023, she invested a total of RM138,000 (about 30,904 USD). However, the promised monthly returns never materialized. Despite the initial promise of steady high returns, the gap between expectations and reality led her to doubt the investment’s legitimacy.

Company Losses Lead to Default on Payments, Even the Principal Was Lost

When she inquired why she hadn’t received the promised returns, the platform's response was that the company had suffered losses and could no longer meet its high-return commitments. This explanation did little to convince her. In the end, she discovered that her total investment earnings amounted to only RM3,676 (about 823 USD), a figure far from the initially promised returns.

Realizing that she might have been scammed, she filed a police report on November 14, 2024, hoping to recover her losses through legal channels. This case once again highlights the need for caution among investors, especially when participating in high-return investment schemes, to avoid falling prey to fraud.

Brokersview's Advice: Invest with Caution

This incident not only exposes the risks associated with online investment scams but also serves as a reminder for investors to remain calm and rational when faced with promises of high returns. Brokersview suggests that investors thoroughly research the project background, verify the platform’s legitimacy, and rely on official channels for information before making decisions to reduce investment risks.

No matter when or where, cautious investment practices and a vigilant mindset are the best defenses against investment scams.
