On April 16, the New Zealand Financial Markets Authority (NZFMA) issued an announcement and listed information about several online investment platforms as they are likely to be involved in fraudulent practices.
Most of these platforms claimed to offer investment services to clients in financial derivatives such as cryptocurrencies or securities to pave the way for conducting investment scams.
The platforms contact potential victims through social media and encourage them to invest in the fake platforms. They also promise investors unrealistic return and guarantee that the investment is profitable.
But when the investor wants to withdraw their profits, the platform refuses and further demands “taxes” or “withdrawal fees”, claiming that the funds will be withdrawn once the payment is made. However, even if the victim pays the fee, it is impossible to withdraw.
The FMA warned investors to remain cautious to these fraudulent platforms. Meanwhile, the regulator said it will keep updating the warning notice.
