The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has raised alarms about phishing scams involving fake advertisements on Facebook and Instagram impersonating local payment services EZ-Link and SimplyGo. Since 1 March 2025, at least 97 such reports have been filed to the SPF, incurring losses of at least $156,000.
These scammers lure victims with promotions offered by fake advertisements or posts on Facebook and Instagram, such as “unlimited travel for $3”, directing them to phishing websites disguising EZ-Link or SimplyGo by using their logos. Victims are tricked into providing credit or debit card details and One-Time Passwords (OTPs) to purchase the EZ-Link cards. Some are first prompted to play online games or complete questionnaires before being qualified for the “promotion” and offered a “gift box” containing a fake free EZ-Link card, followed by requests for payment for the $3 unlimited travel promotion.
Victims only discover the scam upon noticing unauthorized transactions, including the transactions made in foreign currencies, in their bank accounts. The SPF clarified that all legitimate EZ-Link and SimplyGo card promotions are conducted exclusively on their official websites and social media channels, and the "$3 unlimited travel" deals do not exist.
