The Financial Markets Authority of New Zealand (NZ FMA) issued a public warning today, cautioning people about fraudulent websites promoting fake IPO (Initial Public Offering) opportunities. These websites claim to provide insider alerts on upcoming Pre-IPO share purchases, with many referencing an upcoming IPO for the satellite internet company Starlink.
The FMA has flagged eight suspect websites, urging the public to remain vigilant against them and their contacts:

These websites often entice investors by promising early access to IPO investment opportunities, “top picks” of upcoming IPOs, and insights into market trends. Investors are prompted to submit personal contact details and proposed investments through an online form. Subsequently, they are told they will receive emails or calls from representatives about new IPOs “alerts”.
Victims are frequently presented with false claims such as a ‘limited opportunity’ or assurances of a rapid share price rise, leading them to invest. They are required to complete application forms and provide identity documents, including passports, to open accounts and fulfill “Know Your Customer” requirements. Scammers may also email Product Disclosure Statements (PDS) that fail to meet the FMA’s requirements.
Investors will then be instructed to transfer funds to a bank account or via cryptocurrency. The FMA emphasized that being asked to pay for shares in cryptocurrency is a critical red flag.
Victims typically realize the scam only when the promised impending IPO fails to materialize, communication with their brokers ceases, or attempts to withdraw are denied.
