Pig-Butchering Scam Costs A Malaysian Lawyer Over RM 175M

A Malaysian lawyer has been cheated out of nearly RM1.76 million in a Pig-Butchering scam.

In July this year, the 58-year-old lawyer met a foreign man online. The man claimed to be a marine geologist in Malaysia to participate in an underwater oil storage tank construction project off the coast of Terengganu.

One day, the man claimed that he had been robbed, losing all his cash. So he wanted to seek financial assistance from the victim.

The victim agreed to help him and transferred to several different bank accounts totaling RM 1,757,490.

The suspect assured that he would return the money to the victim, but until now, the victim has not received the money back from him.

The victim reported the case to the police on September 9 after realizing she had been duped. Police are investigating the case.

Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said the online scam caused RM2 million in losses to people in Perak's Hilaire district between January and July this year.
